In 1900, two
brothers formed Douglass Brothers Produce Company in Birmingham,
Alabama. (Later, the name became simply Douglass Produce.)
The business operated continuously as a produce wholesaler for over
100 years, making it the oldest produce company in the state of Alabama.
Paul and Gary Wallace, most recent owners of the business, grew up working
at Douglass, as it was previously owned by their father, Oscar.
During the middle of the last century, another wholesale produce company
was launched in Jefferson County by Ken Yarbrough Sr. and L.O. Williams.
It was named Yarbrough Produce. Yarbrough
quickly gained market share and became known as an
industry innovator for
its highly successful line of value-added products. Years later, Ken
Yarbrough's son, Kenny, along with co-owner Johnny Allen, continued
building Yarbrough Produce into a very
successful and dominant presence in the Alabama wholesale produce market.
The principals of the two companies had been both close
friends and able competitors for many years when it was decided to join
together to form a new foodservice distribution enterprise, Regional Produce Distributors.
Regional represents an exceptional synergy of talents, resources,
and vast experience, along with an unrivaled commitment to excellence.
